  1. A research project initiated by the USA in
  2. 1968 to sample the rocks of the ocean crust.
  3. The operation became international in 1975,
  4. when Britain, France, Germany, Japan, and the
  5. USSR also became involved. Over 800 boreholes
  6. were drilled in all the oceans using the ship
  7. Glomar Challenger, and knowledge of the
  8. nature and history of the ocean basins was
  9. increased dramatically. The technical
  10. difficulty of drilling the seabed to a depth
  11. of 2,000 m/6,500 ft was overcome by keeping
  12. the ship in position with side-thrusting
  13. propellers and satellite navigation, and by
  14. guiding the drill using a radiolocation
  15. system.
